World War I began when the Austrio-Hungarian Archduke, Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated. Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia for plotting and carrying out the assassination of their Archduke. Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire sided with Austria-Hungary. The alliance between these countries was called the "Central Powers". Great Britain, the Russian Empire, and France came to Serbia's defense. These countries were called the "Triple Entente", or just simply, "The Entente".
Eventually the tensions broke out at the First Battle of the Marne, which resulted in an Allied Victory. However, Germany (one of the Central Powers) eventually won a battle, the Battle over Tannenberg, a city in Russia.
Numerous battles were fought over the course of the war, most notably the Gallipoli Campaign and the Battle of Verdun. The United States tried to stay neutral (and it did for most of the war), but joined the Entente upon the discovery of the Zimmerman Telegram. The Zimmerman Telegram was a request to Mexico from Germany asking for them to wage an attack on the United States if the US was to join the war on the side of the Entente. Mexico sensibly refused, although it's refusal didn't stop the United States from entering the war. Eventually, the Central Powers surrendered at the Battle of Sharqat, and shortly after, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, ending the war.
